MUSIC CLASS

Harmony students attend music class once a week. The goal of the Harmony Music program is to give the gift of music to all students.  Students work towards being able to hear with their eyes, see with their ears, and sing with their hands.  Hearing happens when students can understand sheet music without having to play/sing it first.  Seeing happens when students are able to translate and dictate the sounds they hear into standard notation.  Singing with their hands happens through use of solfege hand signals/classroom instruments.  Common class activities include:

v      Singing alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music

v      Performing on instruments, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music

v      Improvising melodies, variations, and accompaniments

v      Composing and arranging music within specified guidelines

v      Reading and notating music

v      Listening to, analyzing, and describing music

v      Evaluating music and music performances

v      Discussing the relationship between music, the other arts, and disciplines outside the arts

v      Discussing music in relation to history and culture

PRIVATE LESSONS

Private lessons are available through our after school club program. Harmony School can help you find the right private lesson teacher for your child for piano, voice, or any other instrument. Private lessons are recommended for third, fourth, and fifth graders who are interested in playing an instrument.

Why music education is important for your child:

There is a critical period of opportunity during the elementary years in which children can build their understanding of music. This training allows students to increase their aptitude for music learning later in life.

v      Music is a part of every culture in the world.

v      Some of the people we admire the most are musicians.

v      Music allows us to express the ineffable, that which cannot be expressed through words.

v      Music has an important effect on the brain. Studies have proven that learning music increases spatial intelligence and promotes increased learning across disciplines.

v      Music promotes peace and brings people together. Music also has important healing qualities.

v      And lastly, without music, the world would be a very dull place.
